2017 March
It's Been 13 Years!!
3/30/2017
I feel like home is a revolving door right now. I'm just home from a 10 day whirlwind of a trip to Florida helping the kids with wedding plans and I seem to be running a day behind as I try to catch up with things here at home. Natalie, Brent and I had a VERY productive and FAST 10 days, and the napkins are finished and were left in Florida. The plane tickets back and forth to Florida for April, May and June have been purchased, and the lists of what has to happen, and when, are being checked off daily. So much fun!! I'm looking forward to sharing a future "wedding issue" with you!
I went busy busy as soon as I got home and was able to catch up at Cherry Blossom Powder Coating with the book work, take care of customers fabric orders and get started on these fun pillows. The basement looks like it exploded but it has been worse.... I think????
I'm making these as possibilities for theCrescent Hill Trading Company's Open House, which is tomorrow, Saturday, from 10am - 5pm. I'm so excited to see what works with what Mark has in mind. If they don't work at the new store in Louisville, then they'll go on my ETSY FunkyFibersKY site next week. It's been so much fun to pull out some of my favorite fabrics from a stash I've been saving.
I so hope that some of you can come by and say "hi" either Friday night for the Fat Friday Trolley Hop or all day Saturday for the Grand Reopening. I do miss visiting with my customers... but not the day to day being in the store.
Poor Patty.... check out her living room!
I took my furniture in to town to drop off at the Crescent Hill Trading Company and they weren't quite ready for it. Soooo, being the good friend that Patty is, we plopped 3 chairs and 5 ottomans at her house that happens to be just around the corner from the store.
Thanks, Patty, for helping me haul stuff!
Patty has lots of fun and creative ideas. Look at this great storage solution for jewelry.
She had open storage and decided to use one of the inexpensive cafe rods that you can get at Walmart to hang her jewelry on. It's expandable and easily lifts on and off as you need your necklaces.
Judy says the pictures come out better when the photographer holds the camera still. It is a little bit blurry, isn't it. Sorry about that.
The headboard in the same room is made from old window frames. She painted them and added the black and white tree fabric behind to get this great look.
LOVE THIS... so much dimension in the fabric and it just sets off the room. Great way to reuse and recycle.
Beautiful flowers from my youngest. What a nice surprise! While I was in Florida I celebrated being 13 years cancer free on March 23rd...
I started counting the day when they told me there was no cancer in my lymph nodes and that they had gotten it all!! To me that is a much bigger celebration than my birthday!!
More sewing to do tonight. Don't forget to stop by the Open House tomorrow, if you get a chance.

Mom - I LOVE YOUR NEW PICTURE.
Indiana Dream Home...
3/17/2017
I am so excited to let you know that some of my Funky Fibers Furniture and designs will be showcased in the new expanded Crescent Hill TRADING COMPANY. Mark Gaff, the new owner has been working like crazy to get the store changed over to reflect his style and the new look of the store, and you are all invited to the Grand Reopening.
We would love for you to join us on Saturday, April 1, 2017. The store will be open from 10:00am - 8:00pm with food, drink and more.... including a drawing for 3 - $100.00 gift certificates. You don't want to miss all the excitement! I know I don't!!!
DREAM HOME...
I had the privilege of visiting Greta's house with some friends of mine this past week. Greta and her husband, Rodney, have an old farmhouse in Jeffersonville, IN that they have been restoring and redesigning for a while now. It's an amazing home. Most of the furniture in the house has been made by Rodney in a workshop that I put on my "someday I want a space like this" list.
Check out the beautiful sewing cabinet that Rodney built for Greta. It fits so well in the guest bedroom. Lots of storage for all her pretty fabrics. Also look at the basket liners (right photo: on the shelves) that Greta remade for more storage. She found the cute grommet trim at the Funky Fibers studio one day and decided it was a perfect fit for that project. I definitely agree!!
Small bathroom BIG statement. The goat decided it all. The colors from this cute bathroom came from this adorable painting.
A starting point of something that makes you happy is a good way to begin a room. The purple and green fabrics were just what she needed to kick start this fun woven Batik valence and two tone shower curtain. I recognize that angel on the shower curtain... straight from Funky Fibers Studio (there are four angels still available on my Etsy site).
A patio some only dream about... and it's jump starting my next house! When you walk up to the back of the house this great porch greets you and you feel like you could just live out here. Once again, Rodney made all the fun furniture. I think we all need a 'Rodney' in our lives.
Jeff just cringed when I told him I was ready to build a new house and that I had my starting point! Oh honey, you should see the design notebook that this porch has inspired!! Thanks Greta, Patty and Laura for a fun day.
This cute little building is right off the porch with landscaping around it and it has a plaque that says, "CONFESSIONS 5:00-7:00 DAILY.
Wouldn't you love to have been the mouse in the corner through the years to know the history of this little building and the many people who visited here?
I always take special care in packing online orders being shipped out to customers, so when I received an order the day 'AFTER' I arrived in Florida, and knowing it needed to go out a week before I got home, I convinced Jeff to try to navigate the studio.
HMMM.....
That is about like me trying to sell or build conveyors at his place of business...
But good sport that he was, he found the fiber bundles
that we have on ETSY, found the envelope, and hand wrote the address on the bag.
I think finding a fun piece of batik to put in the ruler, cut it straight with pinking shears, tie it and make it pretty just about put him over the edge!!
He was a good sport about it and I'm thankful that I had him get this together for me before his LOUISVILLE CARDS team lost in the tournament. LOL
It wasn't all me this time! The house was wedding central BEFORE I arrived and the normally neat and tidy house had boxes of wedding stuff sitting all over. So... my mess just added to the mix. The living room is the perfect space for getting it all together! As soon as the wedding is over we'll share LOTS of pictures and directions on how we made everything we're creating. It's taking all the willpower I have to keep my mouth shut and not share with you all the fun stuff as it's coming together! It's exciting and we're having a lot of fun!!
I have been trying to have dinner ready for the kids when they get home from work before we jump into wedding mode and had created this easy and fun dish a while ago thinking it would be easy enough to make ahead of time for them. While it's SO tasty, it's definitely not the healthiest dish that I make!! This is meal size but would work great in smaller mushrooms as an appetizer.
Try my new recipe, Simple Chorizo Stuffed Mushrooms. You'll find it with our other FREE Recipes.
SHHHHH... A secret invitation just for you....
I've heard a rumor that the TRADING COMPANY will be open for a sneak peek on Friday night March 31, from 5-9 during the FAT Friday Trolley Hop. Stop by and see Mark to see what all the excitement is about!
Enjoy your day, and I hope you find something creative to do to make you smile... I'm off to finish my 60 napkins!! This week in Florida has flown by!!

Jayn Lando - I have a package of chorizo in the freezer that I've not been quite sure what to do with. This will be it! And good job, Jeff, getting that package out!
Spinning the Vinyl w/New Ideas!
3/13/2017
The one thing that I have found, as I'm starting this new journey of creating items that I enjoy and then hope to sell, is that you never know what creations will make someone say, "I want that!"
I've been really pleased with the attention the 'Spin the Vinyl Retro Ottoman' is getting. It's been available on Etsy and I've already shipped it out to NC, NY and IL. That's what I'm talking about!!
I need to get another one made before the next order comes in!
The Spin the Vinyl fabric seems to be very successful so I've decided to create a collection of items by adding pillow covers to go on ETSY from the same fabric. I'm also working on a Spin the Vinyl Occasional Chair that I think will be a hit. I look forward to finishing that project!
This has been a week of finishing up lots of projects that have been on the back burner... or the front! I finished the seven tablecloths and they turned out awesome!... if I do say so myself. They are shipped out and headed to Florida. I now have started 60 linen napkins to match.
I really want to know who besides me is crazy enough to take on that project, especially since I don't like to do repetitive work! They're in the suitcase and ready to head to Florida with me. I hope to finish them while I'm there and leave them in the closet until we're ready for them.
One of the smartest things I've done is to leave a sewing machine tucked in the corner of my Florida room... and there's nothing better than sewing outside in the Florida sunshine!
Something's brewing and I want you to
HOLD THE DATE!
((((( APRIL 1st )))))
Next week's blog will have a special invitation for a 'Grand Reopening' to a fun little store in Louisville. A friend of mine has purchased a business off Frankfort Avenue and is in the process of redesigning and rebranding, and is going to showcase some of my furniture and designs in his store. The fun part for me is that he thinks a lot like I do and when we get together we bounce lots of creative ideas off each other. I'm looking forward to displaying my work in his new store. Lots of details to follow.... !!!
I'm so excited!
You should see my studio. I have lots of fabrics spread out and am in the process of creating pillows to go in the Louisville store and on ETSY.
I still have so many fun fabrics left from MEM and I finally have the time to make them and, now, an outlet to display them. YAY!!
I'm headed out to Florida this weekend for a bit and hope to help the kids to get some wedding details nailed down. We'll be working on centerpieces, large arrangements, napkins, finding a venue, finding a source for flowers, and shopping for a dress - for me. UGH! I think it all sounds like fun except the shopping for me part. I hate to clothes shop for myself. I think thats right up there with cooking.
My sewing is packed. Not only do I have napkins packed to sew, but I am taking fabric to work on the window valances for the new AWAKE Ministries in the old MEM building.
I think I need to extend my stay in Florida and I haven't even gotten there!
One more picture taken from my Kentucky home. This is my beautiful Magnolia bush before it turned brown from the cold. It's been fun to have little pops of color this early in the year. It just makes me smile.
It's well past midnight and I better close up shop... Lots of final packing to do tomorrow.

Leslie - Thanks Mary!! I am really looking forward to it. Hope you can make it to the open house!!
Studio Time & FREE STUFF!
3/8/2017
Studio time! All this warm weather had me working in bright colors this week. Well... I guess that's not quite true. I don't need a reason to work in bright colors but I do know that the warm weather has given me a burst of energy. And that's true!
I bought this bright Ikat fabric a while ago and it just seemed to speak to me the other day. It's a true ikat weave, not a print, so I decided to sew around each one of the blocks of color with variegated 'artsy' stitching, with a thin batting on the underside for texture. I'm always wanting to add a little something 'fun' to my designs so I decided to appliqué a lanky heart on each side - a different color for each heart, of course - I love how the hearts just sort of run off the color block of choice. The My Heart Colorblock Ottoman and Colorblock Button-Back Pillow Covers are sold separately and can be found on my ETSY site.
I created the technique for the Funky Fun Frayed Cording used on this ottoman specifically for the last couple of ottomans I've made. It's made with the High Quality Canvas that we sell on our website , funky-fibers.com. If you're interested in making this fun cording for your own projects, It's been added as a FREE instructional PDF to our website under the FREE STUFF category.
Have Fun!
Beth got the hint to share photos with us!! Look at this great room and the two ottomans I designed. She bought the Shabby Chic Ottoman and then had me design a second one to compliment but not be too matchy-matchy. Thanks for sharing the photos, Beth. Your room is beautiful. Love your hand painted Funky Fibers Fleur de Lis Pillow too!!
A lot of designers and upholsterers will tell you NOT to mix tucking and plaids, but I just love the pattern the tucking has created with the plaid in these chairs! A good upholsterer can do this for you. Love the plaid fabric!! Good call, Beth! And.... a great big thank you for your business!
The ottomans also float nicely from the sectional setting to the wingback chairs.
Enough said. I am so glad I have worked so hard on this room so that JP and Bo could enjoy the sun and warm weather!
The next project is laid out and ready to be started.
I'm getting the studio set up to spend the next few days in 'wedding mode.' Linen tablecloths that are going to be 108 x 156" will be a big undertaking. They'll have a white inset in them so it will be a challenge to make sure that the stitching is perfectly straight because the inset will be a focal point....
Here we go!
I have an idea for a new project and need some help, if any of you are interested.
As many of you know, I will be helping AWAKE Ministries get their new women's shelter decorated, and as I was thinking about these women who are starting their fight for recovery, I began thinking of a way to encourage them.
What came to mind was the Scripture Quilting Fabric that I have online and to make an assortment of inspirational pillows for the women to choose from.
Wouldn't it be a blessing to give each woman who enters the program (some who come in with nothing) a 14" pillow made with love that contains a scripture that resonates with them?
I know a lot of you out there are just like me and have piles of fabric and quilting scraps that you just can't let go of, and I'm looking for seamstresses, quilters and sewing masters to make the pillow fronts for me (and backs, if you wish).
I will send you a verse block - or as many as you would be willing to make - to put in the center of a 15" to 16" square. All you need to do is sew some of your fun scraps around the verse. It can be as fancy or as simple as you desire. If stitching is your gift, you're welcomed to embellish to your hearts content. If you are a beginner seamstress, just stitch color blocks around the verse. When finished, just mail them back, or bring them to the studio where I will finish the pillows and stuff them with a pillow form. The finished pillows will be delivered to AWAKE Ministries and handed out as needed. Imagine what a little gift of love can be to someone who is starting a fight for a new life. Will you join me??
Another home photo to share with you before the snow comes. So thankful to enjoy all the beautiful blooms... and in March! Can you believe it?!

Jayn Lando - Ha! I posted a fb memory picture today from 4? years ago of your snow covered front yard. Quite a change from your one here. Would be happy to make pillows for your project ... Maybe 2 or 3 to start.
Leslie - Hey Jayn! Thanks for offering to do the pillows. Please PM me your address and I will get it in the mail to you before I leave town!! Thanks!
Jayn Lando - Sorry - time got away from me and I didn't realize until just now that you were leaving for FL. Just pmed you my address.
Moving the Needle...
3/1/2017
In the business world, if something doesn't 'move the needle', meaning that it doesn't generate a positive reaction, they don't like it. In my world, moving the needle has everything to do with me sitting at my sewing machine and creating positively fun and beautiful products! I was able to get back into a routine in the studio this week to move my needles and it felt so good! The creative juices were flowing and I was able to start and finish a few new projects and work on one that has been hanging around for awhile.
I started this piece of fabric months ago and was planning to use it on a new chair design.
I studied and studied the base cloth and nothing would come to me design wise when trying to embellish.
It had blue jean pockets on it and cats, of all designs... and then I pitched the cats and went for flowers.
When this chair is finished it'll have a fun flower on the top - like The Quirky Bird Chair - and will go in the My Garden Collection. The colors in this picture just don't do the piece justice but I love the teals purples and greens! Can't wait to see it finished!!.
Some long time friends that were in town for an event in Louisville came to visit me in the studio last Saturday. I love to have people visit who get excited about my play space and the items that I'm making. Amy Kim and Gail looked over the studio and found a few things that just had to go home with them, while Justin and Isaiah spent their time outside flying Isaiah's drone. And now Jeff thinks he needs one!
It took all of 10 minutes for Gail to be comfortable in the studio.... love when the shoes come off and guests find the chaise lounge. Jeff just wouldn't sell it to her!!
These were two journals that were ordered, finished and shipped this week.
The gray one has 3 notebooks on the inside that can come out when he is ready for some new journals, and the multi colored one has permanent pages. Easter gifts ready and sent.
Check myFunky Fibers Etsy site for more! I have one for sale and more in the works.
I loved making this ottoman. It compliments the Shabby Chic Ottoman that the customer had purchased a while back, and will look great with the fabric that we chose for her other upholstery needs.
And I loved making the fringe on this. It gives a little of the shabby chic look with the fabric being the main focus. We want pictures when the room is all put together, Beth! HINt HINT!!
Custom orders are the best. Order yours today!!
These are my Japanese Flowering Quince, aka Chaenomeles, and they're actually blooming before the snow flurries are supposed to come in. So beautiful! And now the Aristocrat Pear trees down the lane are getting ready to bloom too... hope we don't lose them!
Off to fix a pot of soup for the weekend........ and then back in the studio where I'm much more comfortable!!
