Charity Starts in the Heart...
7/25/2017

Wow! Ask and ye shall receive! Not too long ago we had a work day in my studio to make scripture pillows for the new AWAKE Ministries Women's Shelter. I received an email after our work day from Mary and she said that the Kentucky Workroom Association would like to volunteer to help us out with the pillows. What an awesome group!  They picked up the scripture verses at the studio and supplied the rest of what was needed to make these gorgeous pillows! Beautiful fabrics, trims and pillow forms, all as a gift to women who need a little love and support. Thank you ladies!! Each one is prettier than the next and the best is that they were made with love!!

Oh yeah... making a mess again!

I'm in the process of redoing chandeliers in some fun bright designs.

The weather was nice enough to get some painting done outside and, as you can see, I've made quite a mess. If you haven't tried Valspar Project Perfect paint and primer all in one, I highly recommend it!  I've bought it in several colors in the past week and every one of them have worked great, and it saves me a step!

I'm all about efficiency these days!

      FUNDRAISER @ TALON WINERY

This chair is waiting for a good home.

It has been donated to A Place to Sleep, one of my favorite charities that supplies beds for children who have no place to lay their heads at night :(.

This chair will be one of the many auction items at the Trick or Drink fundraiser held at Talon Winery on October 29. Please join us for the event. Donate an item to be auctioned or a bid on an item. There's a long waiting list of children who don't have a proper bed for a good nights sleep and A Place to Sleep is in desperate need of more mattresses for the frames and bedding they already have.

Let us know if you can help! More details to follow!!

This chair was also on this weeks agenda.

It's another salvage piece and, with a little patching, a coat of paint, a few polka dots, a new seat and fabric, it's ready for sale!  So I'm on my way to see Mark once again at Crescent Hill TRADING COMPANY!

HOLD THE DATE!Mark will be holding his Christmas Open House the beginning of November with lots of new repurposed one-of-a-kind items! More details to follow!

Oh yes.... the riddle! It's actually a story of 'paying it forward'. Both of these items were mis-marked from the source and couldn't be sold as marked so they were donated to others that could benefit. Since the bag of cucumbers are definitely not Navel Oranges, as clearly marked on the bag, they ended up at The Serenity Center. The pillows were a donation from Target to Dare to Care and then to A Place to Sleep. They're really too big for the children's beds so they're again being donated forward to benefit pregnant women at the Women's Renaissance Center in Shelbyville. If  mommy gets a good night's sleep, that will benefit the child.   And you can help...!

We will be having another Work Day at the studio to make pillow cases to cover the pillows before they are donated to the Women's Renaissance Center. We'll meet August 17th from 10-2 for anyone who would like to join us. Oh my... a definite date to have all the tables cleared in the studio! Email funkyfibersky@gmil.com if you would like to come sew with us!

As I look back over this blog, I realize how much we can help each other by sharing the gifts we have and the talents we are given.... How can YOU get involved and be a blessing to others??

Off to Montreat to volunteer as Community Life Coordinator for the week... Looking forward to playing!!

Jayn Lando - Thanks for the reminder about the pillows! I haven't done the scriptures yet that you sent me ...

Around Town & A Little Riddle...
7/19/2017

Do you ever have a week where it seems like you were so, so busy but don't have much to show for it but a mess?? LOL That was my week!

I spent a few days continuing the work with the Acrylic Pouring so I still have that mess all spread out on one table along with lots of others.

It's gotten to the point that I need to clean up before I move can forward. There's so much clutter that it's overwhelming, even me!!

Despite the mess, I've jumped into several other projects...

...some lamps and lampshades for Crescent Hill TRADING COMPANY - with polka dots of course...

... and painting the legs for the next chair I'm designing for a custom order...

...and a new chair that I'm in the process of painting a fun orange color.

Even though not much got finished in the studio, I have lots of fun places to share with you this week.
My friend, Kathy, and I  were headed out to lunch  to a delightful little place  on Tuesday called The Cafe'.We were lucky that Kathy's daughter, Becca was able to join us and we spent some fun time catching up!

They have a saying there: "Eat at The Café once, and you'll be back again and again." And while its location isn't exactly a breeze to find, it's oh, so worth the hunt!  You'll find it on Brent Street in Louisville across the street from Louisville Stoneware. It has great food, fun atmosphere, good service, gigantic desserts - although I was good and did not try one - and terrific prices. What more can you ask for a fun day out! Check it out if you get a chance.

We also headed over to NuLu and wandered through some of the fun little shops like ScoutRed Tree Furniture, and of course, we wouldn't dare miss a walk through Joe Ley Antiques

On Wednesday Lynn and I took a trip over to Pleasureville, KY to drop of some fabrics at the Main Street Café & BakeryThey have a small bakery and café in the front and a gift shop in the back. We were too early for lunch but the peach cobbler Lynn purchased and brought home sure looked goodThe Yoder family will take the fabrics we dropped off and turn them into beautiful quilts for A Place To Sleep, a nonprofit organization that provides beds and bedding for children in need.

And since we were so close, we decided to drive another 4-5 miles toThe FarmStead Market. They have a green onion cheese that Jeff just loves, and I picked up a hot pepper cheese that looked delicious. Their prices are wonderful and it's an easy little day drive to get there.

One of my favorites is their Christmas Jam with strawberries and cranberries for my morning toast.

Check out the newly powder coated furniture that I just picked up from Cherry Blossom Powder Coating!

The white shows so much better against the brick than the black did, and now I need to get the cushions made!

One more thing added to the "to do " list!

I have a riddle for your week.
What does this bag of cucumbers and this box of pillows have in common?

Give me your guesses and let's see who is right! The answer will be revealed next week!

Jayn Lando - You will be making something with the pillows and something with the cucumbers ... But that's a safe guess because you make something from anything!

Dipping, Dying & Acrylic Pouring...
7/12/2017

What a fun week it's been! I was able to do some yarn dying this past week and was really pleased with the bright colors that came out of the dye bath. Now to wind them, package them, and decide how to market them on my ETSY FunkyFibersKY site.

Next on the agenda is to actually measure both dye and water and try for a "controlled" process, which is really hard for me to do. I just sort of dump, no matter what I'm working on.... I think I do everything modeled after my cooking style! LOL

I also want to do a batch making more variegated yarns and see how that goes.

These were all dyed using Procion Dyes from Dharma Trading CompanyThe yarn sale sure gave me lots more to play with, as if I needed more!!

Here are some pictures of the yarn I was able to get from the super yarn sale at the Shelby County Extension Office. To make room for these shelves and to organize all the yarn I bought, a large roll top desk had to be moved out. It went to AWAKE Ministries and I feel so bad for the guys who had to haul it out.  It was so heavy! I'm sure their backs had to be hurting after that move! Thanks for the help guys!!

These shelves on the left have yarn, undetermined endings, and projects waiting to be designed! More UFO's yet to start!!  And these shelves on the right have the yarn that is waiting to be dyed and baskets full of stuff for my fiber bundles.

Another chair painted and delivered to Crescent Hill TRADING COMPANY this past Saturday.

It was a fun little chair that Mark had in the back of the store in the "marked down section" and it had my name all over it.  So I brought it home and gave it a new personality, 'The Cat's Meow'. Know any cat lovers who might be interested?

I better give a few more of these chairs personalities that are sitting in my studio or before long there won't be room for me to work! That's next week's project, along with a million other things rolling around in my head.

Deb Guess -good friend and talented jewelry artist- was here for a few days this week and we stayed the first day and a half in the studio experimenting with acrylic pouring techniques.  I'm not sure if this is a new technique or just new to me, but when Deb suggested we play with it I jumped right in and was ready to go. It's addicting and we were thrilled with our results!

This technique requires a lot of practice and you never know what results you'll get. It involves: paints, FloetralMod PodgeKodak - Photo FloAlcohol (not for drinking though it could make this process rather funny and much messier), and a mini torch. Sounds like a dangerous combination but really, it's not... as long as the alcohol is for rubbing.

The best part was I was able to use a lot of wood pieces left over from ottoman bases that I just couldn't bring myself to throw out. They sure came in handy, and I now have an empty spot in the storage room! OH YEAH!! Now to rearrange.

Here are some of our finished pieces. I've put a few of the better ones on my Jigidi puzzle page for those of you who like to do online puzzles or who want to see the details on a larger image.

Judy has been after me to do videos for the blog. Maybe this technique would be a good one to start with. There are a lot of pictures, videos and helpful articles on Pinterest and You Tube that can get you started but be aware that there are a TON of different combinations of products and techniques to make this happen. Deb and I did two different processes during our play time and both resulted in good outcomes!

Deb and I were able to bounce ideas off each other while we were painting and came up with a lot of fun possibilities for this type of artwork. And since we seemed to be putting paint on everything we found, Jeff was afraid to come down to the studio. He was certain he would be next!    -   Just look at the mess we made!!!

Deb and I spent our last day together visiting in Louisville, off to buy pieces and parts to enhance and turn our creations into usable pieces of art.

I found an inexpensive table at Crescent Hill TRADING COMPANY that is going to be repurposed, and after a fun lunch with Patty at the Blue Dog Bakery & Café on Frankfort Ave, we headed back to the studio to contemplate possibilities of all our treasures...

and look what we came home to!!!

No telling how this happened but it sure took out a table that was extremely useful to me when working outside!

Now to clean up the mess.... both inside and out!!

Hope - Love the new dyed yarn! Let me know if you need any "samples" crocheted with it for display. I'll be happy to help out!
Leslie - Thanks Hope!! I may call you when I get more things done!!
Jayn Lando - I've been playing with Acrylic Pouring recently too ... so much fun! But you've done this before, I think ... we did a skin on the doll book that we did at your place a couple of years ago ... at least the end result looks like it. The lightbulb went on in my head when I walked by the doll hanging on the wall.
Leslie - You are right Jane!! That was on a much smaller scale and we weren't on the hunt for cells!!!
Laura - I Love that acrylic pouring stuff you all did. That is really cool.
Leslie - It is very cool and so much fun!! Put that way down on our to do list for play days!!
Jo Price - Love your yarns. Robert has been doing some paint pouring recently with fabulous results. It is an intriguing technique. Yours were very beautiful as well. Still loving my ottoman & pillows. Have had so many compliments on them. Have the rest of the inspirational pillows completed for ministry. Can drop them of whenever it's convenient for you.
Leslie - Hey Jo!! Would love to see what Robert has been doing! I know they are beautiful!! I will give you a call and we can make a plan for the pillows!! Many Many thanks!!

My Colorful House...
7/5/2017

Welcome to my colorful house! I think it all started when I turned 60... The ability to do what I want and not care what anyone else thinks.  It's a freeing feeling! Oh, I have always been that way to a certain degree, but I think that my 60th birthday tipped me over the edge. I figure that as long as I'm not hurting anyone, doing good for those around me, and making Jeff and myself happy, so be it.

I have always decorated my houses with the latest fabric, styles, and accessorized them in trendy colors so that they would sell when the time came.  That's just what we did. Jeff and I have been known for buying houses, fixing them up as we go along, selling them, and then starting all over again.

But this time I'm fixing this house up for us, in the colors that WE want, and figure selling is a coat of paint away if the time and right property comes available. Hence my turquoise front door and brightly colored outdoor rugs.

It all started when Patty and I tore the shutters off the house. The dark green was so limiting for the bright colors I like so much. Shutters were never required when we finished the house but were considered 'traditional'" and expected on a house of this style.I spent days painting the porch rails and cleaning up this past week. Jeff's comment when he came home was,"Well, it is bright..... I think I like it!"   Now to just get that right coach lamp fixed!

I can't justify painting the house to get rid of the brick color that I really don't like, that is, if I want to stay married... After all,  you need to know what limits you can push.  So I'll just make do. I got a great deal on the indoor/outdoor Celebrate Summer Floral Medallion rugs from Kohl's... very inexpensive!  The red in the rugs might be a little bright for the brick but I think that the orange in the design pulls out some of the brick color. And if not....oh well. I'll enjoy it for the summer and change it next year. Besides... it makes me smile!!

A work in progress is how I see my house. I still love my bedroom drapes and the view out the back, but because of the yarn that I bought - last week's blog - I needed to rearrange my studio. So... the downstairs sofa had to come upstairs to make room for yarn racks. And a little black and white fits in anywhere... right? Don't mind the unmade bed with the broom laying on top. You really are getting to see what a bad housekeeper I am!!

One of the next projects on my list is to get some bright colored pillows made for the sofa and some cushions made for the rocking chair.  This room is close to being finished.

I think there's something going on in every room of my house right now. My goal is to have a party this Fall so I'm getting things ready.

This project was started in 2015 when Darci and I were getting ready to teach a class at ARW.  We spent a few days in the studio making the backs of the cabinets for all the class kits.  Darci taught the class and my cabinet stayed unfinished in the MEM warehouse where it quickly became a UFO.

This 2'X4' cabinet door came from Darci's remodel.

As I'm trying to clean out the warehouse - still - I yelled "squirrel" when I found it, brought it home and decided to finish it for my bathroom. It fits perfect over the toilet and is just the right size to put toiletries in so they're front and center at my fingertips! I love it!!

Check out the fun dancing ladies. These are some of my favorite stencils from Stencil Girl Products. They have a huge line of stencils by so many creative artists!! I think I resonate with these dancing ladies!!

And then there's the yarn...

I'll show you next week the new shelving system.

In the mean time, I was able to get some of the yarn wound and ready to dye and took advantage of the nice weather and the porch outside the studio.

More on this project next week!

There's lots of yarn to dye and I'll be sharing the process as I go along.

I've been hunting... for furniture! I have a few custom orders and have been waiting for the perfect pieces and parts to reveal themselves so I can start the creative processes, and this chair has answered one of my needs. This chair is just screaming for a makeover, and it's going to get one!!

One of my customers absolutely loved the two coral Santa Fe Garden Accent Chairs that I delivered to Crescent Hill TRADING COMPANY but the colors didn't work for her. So, I've been on a hunt for a chair style that would work for her. It's amazing that you see that style of chair in every antique store around until you actually need one!

I shopped The Paisley Pig and Operation Care in Shelbyville but still didn't find what I needed. But there were lots of other great items in these stores if you get time to get out and shop!

I finally found this treasure of a chair at Venders Village in Clarksville, Indiana. They have five locations, three in Kentucky and the other two in Indiana.

Off to see what today is all about. I think that we are going to play with making mosaics in the studio today. Oh this could get messy!!

Linda - Really love the turquoise front door and those bedroom drapes are to die for. My only color splurge is the trim, shutters, and front door, all painted a purplish blue. The painter stopped to ask if I was sure the front door should be that color - and him a budding artist! When it was done, he told me that I was right. lol
Gonna miss you at AULeslie - Oh Linda..... I will SOOOO miss being there this year. I will be thinking of you and missing the wonderful classes and daily walks and our little chats on the side..... Have fun!!
Darci McKinnon - Love the rug and the cabinet looks great! Now I just need to finish mine. Lol!
Leslie - Better get busy!! I am surprised it made the move!! Jeff would trash my "treasures" before he moved them!!
Jayn Lando - I need to finish my cabinet!
